PITCHFORK PREVIEW: EMMIE's 2022 Artist to Watch

This time last week, I ran into Indigo De Souza on State Street in Madison, Wisconsin. It was the day she was slated to open up for My Morning Jacket at Breese Stevens Field. Indigo has been on my radar of artists to watch for the past year and this weekend she is set to perform at Pitchfork Music Festival.

During my time as Albums Editor at EMMIE, I was in charge of picking 20 albums for print—ten per semester. For the Crush Issue, Indigo’s Any Shape You Take was featured. I knew when first listening to the artist’s sophomore release that it would be no time before she blew up.

Indigo De Souza has a way with words, but it’s her rhythm that first catches listeners and reels them in. Indigo has groove and each beat is filled with emotion.

During her short set opening for My Morning Jacket, Indigo De Souza put everything into every minute. It would only take seeing her live once to know she’s a true performer. Her voice is angelic, she doesn’t stop dancing and she sings every word like it’s the only thing in the world she believes in.

The day she performed at Breese Stevens she turned 25 years old. You can catch her fresh into her mid-20s and on the rise as she tours with Mitski at Pitchfork Music Festival on Friday at the Green Stage from 4:15 - 5:10 p.m.

If you can’t make it down to Chicago this weekend, you’ll still get the chance to see Indigo De Souza at the Terrace on Sunday Night, thanks to WUD Music.
